Magic of Children
We have four children. Having children does mean that probability is limited to ever get rich in cash. We are rich in emotion, rich in having the next generation at our home, and sitting on the table. Rich in seeing the different perspectives, and rich in never being bored. We know why we are tired at evenings, and we understand it is an adventure to have a family of six with just one income.
Children tell us why we have a reason to get up in the morning and to do work we believe is meaningful. Children teach us our social competences, and children are demanding. Not necessarily in big money, but in big emotion. To build a shelter at home. To be ambitious. Every dollar/Euro/whatever earned is just 1/6th of it per person. In other words – the probability a family gets super fancy and wasting resources is rather limited. There is not enough available to waste. Families understand to eat the leftovers from yesterday and tend to stay normal.
In management, a family may be a great support in focusing on the revenant topics. Now what´s relevant? What is relevant will be seen and measured through the culture a family is embedded in. However, social competence will be part of a normal family life, or the family may break. Families understand there is a certain level of wealth necessary to navigate the waters, but additional wealth may not add comfort. What may be more relevant is the presence of the parents (and in a certain age the absence but not leaving the children alone) and the perception having an intact family (what will differ family by family). Families understand there may me out of the sudden changes in priorities. And families will develop a certain resilience against stress.
Is a family relevant in a business context? It may, because it is immediately part of a person´s behavior and therefore contributing to an organization´s culture. If you want to reflect your organizational culture, feel invited to talk.
